Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month: how to get involved
May is Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) prevention month in Australia, a national initiative aimed at raising awareness of domestic and family violence and coercive control. It highlights the support services which are available and sends a clear message that violence in our communities will not be tolerated.

Here in Queensland, the theme for 2025 is “Take positive action today to build a safer Queensland” encouraging us all as individuals and communities to engage in proactive measures to prevent domestic and family violence.
There are various events which have been and are being held throughout the month to honor victims, raise awareness and advocate for change, such as:
- candlelight vigils: these were held on the first Wednesday of this month. These vigils honour those who have lost their lives due to family and domestic violence.
- community rallies such as the ’No more violence’ rallies were held all around Australia on 10 May.
- Darkness to Daylight Challenge: This is a community initiative where you can either run or walk to raise funds and awareness for domestic and family violence prevention. This will be held from 29 to 30 May. Click here to find more information on this event and how you can participate.
These events and initiatives are part of a broader movement to address and prevent domestic and family violence in Australia. They provide opportunities for individuals and communities to get involved, show support and take action towards creating safer environments for all.
If you're interested in participating or learning more about events in your area, visit the Queensland Government's DFV Prevention Month page or check local community calendars for upcoming activities. You can also find plenty of resources, information and promotional materials to assist you.

This month is an opportune time to remind employees they can access 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave each year, including full-time, part-time and casual employees. This entitlement is part of the National Employment Standards (NES).
The ’Be there’ app empowers individuals on how to be there for a loved one, friend, neighbour or colleague who is in an unhealthy or abusive relationship. The app provides tools to educate and support individuals in assisting someone experiencing domestic or family violence.
