On 8 March, we acknowledged International Women’s Day (IWD). Officially recognised by the United Nations in 1977, IWD is commemorated in different ways around the world, from political demonstrations to fundraising events.
Did you know that it is an official holiday in more than 20 countries including Afghanistan, Ukraine, Russia and Cuba?
IWD 2025 was a global celebration not only celebrating the incredible contributions of women but also serving as a call to action. The theme this year was ‘Accelerate Action’ for gender equality, emphasised the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the barriers and biases that women face, both personally and professionally.
During this year’s IWD, women across the world called for equal pay, reproductive rights, education, justice, access to health care and decision-making powers.
IWD each year is a day to celebrate the incredible contributions of women in the medical field. From doctors, nurses, practice managers, administrators and support staff, women play a vital role in shaping the future of medicine.
As we reflect on the importance of gender equality, let's continue to create an environment where all women are empowered, supported and given equal opportunities to thrive. By fostering diversity and inclusion, we not only improve workplace culture but also enhance patient care.
Here's to the strong, inspiring women who are making a difference every day in our medical practices.
