Support for medical students experiencing financial hardship

Do you know a medical student doing it tough? The AMA Queensland Foundation has now opened applications for the 2025 Medical Student Scholarships.

Scholarships of $10,000 paid in two equal instalments will be awarded to up to three financially disadvantaged medical students this year.

Applicants are required to be studying an MBBS course or equivalent at a university in Queensland, with a GPA of 4.0 or above. They must also be able to demonstrate financial hardship.

“Medicine is a long degree with increasing commitments, so it’s not always possible for medical students to do paid work alongside their studies,” AMA Queensland Foundation Chair Dr Dilip Dhupelia said.

“The Medical Student Scholarships provide a helping hand to students that need it most, enabling them to keep studying and realise their dreams of becoming a doctor.”

In 2024, the Foundation was able to award scholarships to three medical students, with an additional student funded by the Indian Medical Association of Queensland under the Sponsor one Student (SoS) initiative.

“These scholarships are an important way we can foster a future medical workforce to meet the needs and expectations of the communities they will eventually serve,” he said.

“Queensland is best served by doctors from a broad range of backgrounds who can connect with our diverse communities and ultimately promote better health outcomes.”

Applications open 13 January 2025 and close 31 March 2025. Information on how to apply is available on the Foundation website.
