New generation of doctors to bolster the workforce
Nearly 900 new Interns have kickstarted their career on the frontline today, bolstering Queensland’s medical workforce.

This year’s intake is a five per cent increase on last year, as expected with Queensland’s population growth and the urgency to reverse our health workforce shortage.
“Congratulations to our new doctors on your years of hard work, study and training. The passion and dedication it takes to make it to this point in your career says a lot,” AMA Queensland President Dr Nick Yim said.
“This year’s intern intake is the largest in Queensland’s history, but we still have a long way to go to meet demand and the state government’s goal of 46,000 new healthcare workers by 2032.
“These new interns will be eager to put their years of study to use, start their medical careers and be of service to patients in rural, regional and metropolitan hospitals.
“Although our health system is far from perfect, we know that Queensland is an excellent place to work, with first class medical and training opportunities.
“Working in healthcare is extremely rewarding, but it also comes with many challenges.
“We look forward to working on behalf of all new Queensland interns and with those who are already AMA Queensland members to address these challenges.
“Each year, AMA Queensland conducts the Resident Hospital Health Check survey, which asks junior doctors about their experiences in Queensland hospitals regarding training, professional development opportunities, health and wellbeing and culture.
“We use this data to guide AMA Queensland advocacy and give a platform to doctors in training to have their voice heard.
“At all career stages, retention is just as important as recruitment, and AMA Queensland looks forward to working with Queensland Health to take the best care of these new interns.
“We would like training to remain a priority and great care taken for the health and wellbeing of these new doctors.”
