Have your say on pharmacist prescribing: PBA consultation now open

The Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA) is currently consulting on a proposed national standard for pharmacist prescribing. This is a significant regulatory proposal that could reshape prescribing responsibilities across Australia and has important implications for patient safety, continuity of care, and clinical governance.

Recently, we ran a survey for our members to better understand your views on pharmacy prescribing. Our response to the consultation will reflect what we have heard.

But we also encourage you to engage with the consultation directly and ensure the medical profession’s perspective is clearly represented.

Read the consultation documents on the Pharmacy Board website

Why this matters

  • The proposed changes introduce a national endorsement model for pharmacist prescribing.
  • Pharmacists are already prescribing in some jurisdictions, with this proposal aiming to standardise education and training requirements nationally.
  • The consultation will inform future regulatory settings that affect prescribing, diagnosis, and models of care.
