AMA SA 2025 Hospital Health Check
AMA SA has just released its annual Hospital Health Check (HHC), in which junior doctors’ responses to key Medical Training Survey questions (MTS) about their working conditions are summarised and analysed.
For several years, AMA SA has extracted MTS data to highlight junior doctors’ perspectives on the conditions they work in within the state’s major public hospitals, and published the analysis in the HHC. It’s led to intense examination by AMA SA of issues such as bullying, harassment and discrimination and the importance of doctors feeling they can record all the hours they work, and been the basis of media commentary about how these issues affect doctors and, ultimately, patient safety.
In taking South Australian results from the national Medical Training Survey (MTS) and ‘drilling down’ to hospital-level, the HHC demonstrates that differences in reported experiences exist between workplaces – and that those workplaces that ignore the doctors’ concerns are indirectly risking the health and wellbeing of all.
This year’s HHC follows the same pattern. It continues to identify local doctors’ responses to questions based on their experiences working in specific South Australian public hospitals. However, because we know the commentary can be useful for would-be interns identifying suitable placement options, we’ve added some elements to help make comparisons between hospitals easier. These elements include a colour-coded report card that gives each major site a letter grade for its performance in a certain realm of issues.
