AMA submission to the RACGP standards for general practice residential aged care

The AMA provided a submission to the Draft RACGP Standards for general practice residential aged care. The AMA welcomed the new standards and thanked RACGP for the opportunity to provide feedback. AMA’s broad comments regarding the Draft Standards included AMA members’ remark that the Standards fail to explicitly mention the need for availability of registered nurses in residential aged care. It is the AMA’s position that RNs must be available on-site at RACFs 24/7 to provide appropriate medical care for older patients.

AMA also commented on the shared electronic records in aged care and the chemical restraints in aged care, emphasising the need to balance the Standards’ requirements with the real patients’ wishes and goals.
