Protecting patient data
Did you know AMA SA’s partner, Hood Sweeney, offers technology services with Orlo One. And Orlo One is warning of an increasing number of cyber-attacks on medical businesses.

An increasing number of cyber-attacks on medical businesses has raised concerns about the security and protection of sensitive patient data.
In one recent cyber incident reported in Cyberdaily, the so-called Anubis ransomware gang allegedly accessed and published sensitive patient data and CCTV footage from a Victorian medical centre with about 30 staff. This breach highlights the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures for medical practices of all sizes.
The Anubis ransomware gang claims to have accessed extensive medical data, including personal information such as medical cards, passports, and dates of birth. They also allege to have internal documents revealing non-compliance with safety standards and cases of malpractice. This breach has exposed the vulnerabilities in cybersecurity infrastructure, leading to concerns about patient privacy and data security.
In a second incident in as many days, a similarly small medical centre in Wagga Wagga confirmed it is investigating a cyber incident that may involve personal data. An unauthorised person is believed to have accessed the centre’s IT systems, committing a criminal offence. The incident has been contained, and in this case the medical centre is working with cyber experts to respond and protect the privacy of community members and staff. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has been informed, and the business in the process of determining what data has been accessed.
The Ramifications
The implications of such breaches are far-reaching. Malicious actors can exploit medical data for identity theft, insurance fraud, and blackmail. Unlike financial data, which can be changed relatively easily, medical records are permanent and hold long-term value. This makes healthcare entities, including small and medium--sized practices in suburban or regional areas, particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks.
The Importance of Cybersecurity in Healthcare
Healthcare businesses are urged to prioritise cybersecurity to protect sensitive patient information. The connected nature of patient care, involving multiple clinicians and facilities increases the risk of data breaches. Whether you are a small, medium, or large practice, you are vulnerable to cyber-attacks.
