Federal review of MRI referrals

AMA SA has outlined how GPs can play a key role in improving patient access to MRI services.

Late last month, the Federal AMA asked AMA SA CGP to comment on a Commonwealth Department of Health Federal AMA submission into the Federal review of requesting and access pathways to MRI services.

The South Australian feedback was forwarded to the Federal Committee for General Practice team and reflected in the response. Overall, the submission reinforced the importance of radiologist-led oversight of imaging procedures and interpretation but recommended expanded scope of practice for GPs to request MRIs on an evidence-based and clinically appropriate basis. The submission highlighted the opportunity to improve timeliness, reduce costs and enhance continuity of care – without adding unnecessary burden to the system or risking patient safety - by enabling GPs to refer for MRIs. It notes that this is an issue of equity for patients in regional and remote areas particularly affected by delays and increased costs. However, the AMA has not supported expanding access to referrals to non-medical health practitioners unless they are collaborating with medical practitioners.

The AMA SA CGP input reinforced these points and emphasised the importance of the GP as ‘the responsible steward’ of a patient’s investigations, care and overall health and wellbeing.

Consultation continues, with a report to be provided to the Federal Government in early 2026.
