Government’s commitment to mandatory marketing code for infant formula applauded

We have welcomed the federal government’s strong action on infant formula marketing.

The federal government this week indicated it will scrap the current voluntary marketing code for infant formula, which has allowed manufacturers and retailers to irresponsibly market their products to parents and carers.

In a submission to the Australian Consumer Competition Commission the Department of Health and Aged Care said it is committed to mandating the Marketing in Australia of Infant Formulas (MAIF) agreement.

The AMA, together with other public health groups, has long called for the agreement to be made mandatory.

In a media statement, AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said: “The government’s commitment represents a critical moment for Australia as we move towards enforceable legislation that regulates the marketing of infant formula, which has become even more aggressive and irresponsible with the rise of social media”.

The AMA continues to call for regulations to regulations to be introduced on the marketing of toddler milks.
