AMA Rural Medical Training Summit

The AMA’s Rural Medical Training Summit brought together key stakeholders and experts to discuss what is needed to address Australia’s regional workforce issues.

Key issues relating to Australia’s regional medical workforce and potential measures to address ongoing shortages were discussed at the AMA’s Rural Medical Training Summit last Friday.

The clear consensus among stakeholders at the summit was the importance of supporting general practice and the need to explore how the Specialist Training Program can be better utilised, as well as how to better support and protect International Medical Graduates (IMGs).

Attendees and representatives showed a clear commitment, understanding, and drive to improve access to rural medical training, including for non-GP specialists.

The summit brought together key stakeholders in rural and regional training including current rural trainees and supervisors, specialist medical colleges, regulators, consultants and government representatives.

One of the world’s foremost authorities in rural medical education — Professor Roger Strasser AM — delivered a keynote address, a recording of which can be accessed on the summit website under ‘Presentations’.

A summary of recommendations arising from the day and report of the AMA Rural Medical Training Summit will be released shortly.
