AMA leading discussions on private health

The AMA will hold a private health workshop next week as part of a concerted push for reform to the system.

As part of increased efforts to improve the private health system, the AMA will hold a workshop next week to hear from the sector’s top stakeholders and experts.

It follows last week’s release of the AMA’s latest report: Out-of-hospital models of care in the private health system.

AMA President Professor Steve Robson said Australia’s private health system is recognised globally for its efficiency and quality of care – but improvement is needed after years of little to no reform.

The AMA’s report released last Friday found millions of dollars could be saved and tens of thousands of beds freed up if more out-of-hospital care is delivered in Australia’s private health system.

Looking at knee replacements alone, the AMA’s report showed expanding access to out-of-hospital rehabilitation to patients who are assessed as clinically appropriate could save up to $62.7 million and free up 94,000 beds freed each year.

Professor Robson said the report demonstrated the potential for out-of-hospital care to generate new efficiencies in healthcare delivery.
