Incoming title change for ‘podiatric surgeons’

AMA welcomes Ahpra’s action on “podiatric surgeons” but potential for confusion lingers.

We welcome Ahpra’s decision to change the title of “podiatric surgeon” but we remain concerned the new terminology approved by health ministers could still confuse patients.

Ahpra announced this week that, from 5 October 2026, podiatrists who perform surgical procedures will be known as “surgical podiatrists”.

While Ahpra says this will provide “greater clarity for the public”, we are concerned patients could still assume “surgical podiatrists” are doctors, as the term closely resembles “surgeon”.

In November 2023, we called for action to protect patients from being misled by podiatrists calling themselves “surgeon” despite not having a medical degree or surgical training.

While we commend Ahpra and the Podiatry Board of Australia for tackling this issue, we will be seeking further clarification about the use of “surgical” in the new title.
