Dear MP, I’m writing to express my real concern about the state of general practice in Australia. As a resident of this country, I am concerned about the difficulties faced by many individuals and families who are struggling to access care timely and affordable care through their local general practice. I am also concerned that the adoption of alternative primary care models are simply a band-aid solution, and will lead to further fragmentation of care. It is widely acknowledged that investment in general practice leads to better health outcomes, and reduces the burden on other parts of the health system such as hospitals. Yet, we have seen decades of neglect and underinvestment in general practice by successive governments, and investment in alternative primary care models that lack evidence and will fragment care. Investment in general practice needs to be prioritised in the upcoming budget, to ensure Australian’s can access the high-quality care that they need, when they need it. I urge you to take my concerns seriously and to work towards improving the state of general practice in Australia. We cannot continue neglecting this critical part of our healthcare system.
