AMA submission to the TGA Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling proposal to upschedule codeine
The AMA's submission to the TGA's Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling responded to a proposal that current Schedule 3 preparations of codeine be shifted to Schedule 4. The AMA's submission raised the importance of ensuring any changes to scheduling was based on evidence it would address the perceived problem.
The TGA later announced an 'interim decision' to remove all codeine preparations from Schedule 2 (over the counter) and Schedule 3 (pharmacist supervised) and limit access only by prescription from 1 July 2016. The AMA's subsequent submission supported this decision.
