AMA submission to the National Prescribing Service Prescribing Competencies Project

The AMA supports the National Prescribing Services’s efforts in developing a framework that articulates the competencies essential to safe, effective and high quality prescribing of medicines. The AMA’s submission made specific comments on the draft framework, including that it should place more emphasis on:

•  practitioners prescribing within their scope of practice;
•  being competent in using knowledge and making judgments on when not to prescribe;
•  referring a person to another health professional when that person’s clinical condition is outside scope of practice;  and
•  referring a person to a medical practitioner if they fail to improve within a specified period of time
