Queensland’s Japanese Encephalitis Virus vaccination program

Queensland Health has provided important updates for vaccination providers regarding the Queensland Japanese Encephalitis Virus vaccination program.

Important Update - Queensland Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) Vaccination Eligibility

Eligibility for the JEV program has expanded further. 

In addition to those already eligible, JEV vaccination is now recommended and funded for people who: 

  • Live or work in, or have a planned visit to Banana LGA, and are at risk of mosquito bites.

Action Required: 

  1. Review the full list of eligible individuals and LGAs on the Queensland JEV website
  2. Update your screening procedures to identify eligible patients.
  3. Note eligibility for funded vaccine will be expanded to those at highest risk of JEV as required. The Queensland Health Immunisation Program will issue updates to providers and other stakeholders in line with eligibility expansions.

The Queensland Health Immunisation Program (QHIP) hosted a webinar on Queensland’s Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) vaccination program on Wednesday 9 April 2025. 

Dr Stephen Lambert, Public Health Physician, Queensland Department of Health, presented on Queensland’s JEV vaccination program, covering the:

  • recent increase in JEV detections, including human cases,
  • vaccine eligibility and access, and
  • other key JEV prevention strategies.
