General Practice Leadership Excellence Program
Registrations are now open for the 2024 General Practice Leadership Excellence Program, a two-day program this November in collaboration with the University of Queensland and the AMA.
GPLEP is designed to empower medical experts to lead confidently, authentically and with purpose, influencing the health communities they work and live in. Participants will develop personal leadership skills, build effective stakeholder networks and gain awareness of governance best practices and risk management.
The program equips healthcare leaders to influence policy and drive change, making it ideal for those seeking to expand their leadership portfolio and significantly impact the healthcare sector.
The tailored learning experience focuses on real-world applications, fostering leadership impact and effective team building. The immersive, face-to-face format encourages camaraderie, networking and collaboration, providing dynamic group activities, interactive discussions and live case studies. The program also includes profiling of your personal leadership approach and traits as well as two executive coaching sessions designed to support your leadership aspirations and goals.

Who can attend
GPLEP is open to all general practitioners across Australia.
It is designed to enhance leadership skills, build effective networks and deepen understanding of the leadership and governance opportunities for GPs to further their contributions to the broader healthcare system.
Participation in this program can count towards GP professional development points, providing a valuable opportunity for ongoing professional growth and accreditation.

Facilitators
Dr Mark O'Brien |
Dr O'Brien is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland and the Programme Director of the Oxford Healthcare Leadership Programme at Oxford University's Saïd Business School. He also serves as a Non-Executive Director of St John of God Healthcare Australia.
With a background as a rural GP, Dr O'Brien has held significant roles, including:
- Medical Director of the Cognitive Institute
- leadership positions at the Medical Protection Society in London
- has trained over 300,000 healthcare professionals globally
He is also a recognised expert in healthcare quality and safety, receiving the Australian College of Health Service Management's President's Award in 2016.
Hon. A/Prof Neil Paulsen |
Hon. A/Prof Neil Paulsen, from the University of Queensland Business School, specialises in management and leadership. With over 20 years of industry experience he has served as a senior manager and consultant across public, private and community sectors.
He is deeply involved in organisational life both as a practitioner and researcher. He has extensive experience in:
- facilitating leadership development and organisational programs
- working with sectors including healthcare, mining, constriction, and engineering, as well as all levels of governments
His expertise extends internationally, having worked across Europe, Asia and Africa.
