COVID infection control measures in Queensland Health hospitals
AMA Queensland has written and met with current and former Chief Health Officers over the past few years to express members' concerns about rising COVID cases and inadequate infection controls within Queensland Health hospitals.

AMA Queensland to Chief Health Officer Dr Heidi Carroll, Wednesday 2 April 2025
Our members have again raised concerns that that important infection controls, particularly to reduce the spread of airborne disease remain outstanding. They also advise that critical infrastructure due to be constructed in accordance with recommendations from reviews of Queensland’s pandemic response have been shelved due to the imposition of capital expenditure limits by HHSs and/or government.
Given this remains an ongoing issue for many of our members, we have requested to discuss this at our upcoming meeting with the CHO on Monday 7 April.
Acting Chief Health Officer A/Prof Catherine McDougal to AMA Queensland, 30 April 2024
The Acting CHO responded to our letter titled Queensland Health staff sick leave and CHO hospital infection control visits with the following feedback:
- Hospital staff have welcomed the visits which have provided an opportunity for frank and open dialogue,
- The opportunity for all staff to have an opportunity for further feedback if they have infection control concerns will be explored, and;
- Queensland Health is working with Professor Morawska from QUT in a research project titles 'Making Australia resilient to airborne infection transmission', and the outcomes will be considered by Queensland Health in the potential building upgrades and new Queensland Health facilities.
