Canberra doctor wins AMA’s inaugural Diversity in Medicine Award

A Canberra doctor who founded a not-for-profit organisation championing diversity, equity and inclusion in orthopaedics has won the AMA’s first ever Diversity in Medicine Award.

Dr Jennifer Green

Dr Jennifer Green, an Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon based in Canberra, trained in NSW and undertook Fellowship training at the Indiana Hand Centre, Indianapolis, USA and Institut de la Main, Paris, France.

Dr Helen McArdle, Chair, AMA Committee on Equity, Inclusion and Diversity presented the award to Dr Green at the AMA’s National Conference.

I am delighted to announce Dr Green as the recipient of this award for her outstanding contribution to promoting and implementing equity, inclusion, and diversity initiatives within the medical profession and workplace,” Dr McArdle said.

“Dr Green is the founder of the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance (IODA), a recently established collaborative not-for-profit of more than 800 members worldwide championing diversity, equity and inclusion in orthopaedics,” Dr McArdle said.

“As the Chair of the Australian Orthopaedic Association’s (AOA) Orthopaedic Women’s Link from 2018 to 2020, she was directly responsible for implementing the AOA’s inaugural Diversity Strategy. And she helped to establish the AOA Cultural Inclusion Working Group.”

Dr McArdle said Dr Green promoted diversity, equity and inclusion every single day through orthopaedic and hand surgery scientific meeting presentations in Australia and internationally, publication of evidence-based articles, contributions to webinars and podcasts, medical student events and was an active advocate of diversity across social media platforms.

Dr Green is a member of the AOA Champions of Change, a national committee of (mostly) male representatives from every state who are #heforshe advocates. She is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in surgery and particularly in orthopaedics which is the least diverse medical specialty worldwide.

Dr Green has also held roles as an AOA Training Supervisor, the Royal Australian College of Surgeon’s (RACS) ACT State Committee and the RACS Women in Surgery Section Committee nationally.

She sits on the Board of the Australian Hand Surgery Society and is the Australian Representative on the Asia Pacific Federation of Hand Surgery Societies (APFSSH).

Dr Green promotes diversity, equity and inclusion daily through orthopaedic and hand surgery scientific meeting presentations in Australia and internationally, publication of evidence-based articles, contributions to webinars & podcasts, medical student events and an active advocacy across social media platforms.

In congratulating Dr Green, out-going AMA President, Dr Omar Khorshid, said it was important for the medical profession to embody and promote equity, inclusion, and diversity.

“We established this award to underline our commitment and contribution to making medicine more inclusive and diverse.

“Dr Green has led by example in this area and I am delighted to honour her as the first ever recipient of this important award,” Dr Khorshid said.
