AMA members honoured in Australia Day awards
The AMA congratulates 20 members who have been recognised in this year's Australia Day Honours, including Australian of the Year Professor Georgina Long AO.
The list includes Professor Kelvin Kong, Australia’s first Indigenous surgeon, who was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
The Honourable Dr Brian Pezzutti, a former member of the NSW Legislative Council and decorated Army Reserve officer, was also made a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition for his significant service to the NSW parliament and community health.
AMA President Professor Steve Robson said all the AMA recipients had distinguished themselves and had served the medical profession and the community with distinction.
He also congratulated AMA member Professor Long, who was named Australian of the Year alongside Professor Richard Scoyler AO for their outstanding work in developing a series of world-first treatments for melanoma, saving thousands of lives.
“I want to offer my congratulations to all of the recipients for their outstanding efforts,” Professor Robson said.
“Australia has one of the best trained medical workforces in the world and continues to achieve outstanding health outcomes for the community,” Professor Robson said.
“These awards once again recognise the outstanding contribution that doctors make to society.”
The Member of the Order of Australia recipients include Dr Kelvin Kong — Australia’s first Indigenous surgeon, and one of the first winners of the AMA’s Indigenous Medical Scholarship.
The Chief Executive Officer of AMA Tasmania, Ms Lara Giddings, was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the people, community, and the Parliament of Tasmania.
