Two AMA Queensland members receive King’s Birthday honours

Two AMA Queensland members have been recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday honours for their significant service to medicine, their profession and the community.

Associate Professor David Rimmer received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division and Dr Carol Douglas received the Public Service Medal (PSM) in today’s list.

“Congratulations to A/Prof David Rimmer and Dr Carol Douglas for their outstanding achievements in medicine, health and compassionate care,” AMA Queensland President Dr Nick Yim said.

“Our members are consistently seeking ways to positively impact our healthcare system and protect the health of their patients and communities, and it is fantastic to see such noble efforts recognised.

“Long-time AMA Queensland member A/Prof Rimmer is being honoured for his service to rural and remote medicine – a critically important area of health that has historically been underserved.

“Currently a Professor at James Cook University’s Murtupuni Centre for Rural and Remote Health and an Accredited General Practice Training Program Supervisor for the RACGP, he is dedicated to improving primary care access in the regions – a commitment that also led to his recognition as Longreach’s 2025 Citizen of the Year.

“Dr Douglas has devoted her career to improving end-of-life care for patients, families and carers across Queensland and Australia, and has been rightfully recognised for her outstanding public service in palliative medicine.

“Through establishing the Queensland Palliative Medicine Training Program – aimed at meeting increasing demand and ensuring equity of access to palliative services – and serving in multiple leadership roles across national palliative health bodies, she has become a highly regarded leader in the field.

“I also want to acknowledge the extraordinary philanthropic support of Clive Berghofer AM who has donated millions of dollars into medical research.

“Today he is being recognised for his distinguished service to the community that extends from his support of health and emergency services to sporting and educational organisations and has been appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the General Division.

“I am honoured to represent and advocate on behalf of AMA Queensland members and the state’s countless hardworking doctors.

“I am deeply thankful for every doctor who continues to strive for better health outcomes for all Queenslanders.”
