AMA on the front foot for responsible Artificial Intelligence

Two submissions in past weeks show the AMA is leading the way in ensuring AI is used responsibly and effectively in healthcare.

We recently provided submissions to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (on clarifying and strengthening the regulation of Artificial Intelligence) and the Department of Health and Aged Care (on the Safe and Responsible AI in Health Care Legislation and Regulation Review).

The submissions argue the development and implementation of AI technologies must be undertaken with appropriate consultation, transparency, accountability. They argue regular, ongoing review to is also needed determine AI’s clinical and social impact and ensure AI continues to benefit, and not harm, patients, healthcare professionals, and the wider community.

Healthcare is a high-risk sector for the use of AI and we will continue advocating for a balanced approach that fosters technological innovation while ensuring patient safety. With AI advancements driven by profit-oriented entities, strict accountability measures and ethical guidelines are crucial for safe AI use in healthcare.

We support a tiered regulatory framework based on the risk associated with specific AI applications, drawing inspiration from successful international models.
