Help shape the National Maternity Workforce Strategy

AMA members are invited to participate in the National Maternity Workforce Strategy consultation.

The Department of Health and Aged Care invites AMA members to take part in the National Maternity Workforce Strategy consultation survey.

As you may be aware, the department, in collaboration with jurisdictions, is developing the National Maternity Workforce Strategy 2026-2036

The survey on the National Maternity Workforce Strategy 2026-2036 will remain open until Tuesday 4 February 2025.

The strategy is a key initiative funded as part of the Independent review of Australia’s regulatory settings relating to overseas health practitioners (the Kruk review). It forms part of Recommendation 18 from the Kruk Review ‘Support better planning for Australia’s future workforce needs, including developing national workforce strategies for maternity.'

The strategy aims to ensure there is a sufficient supply of maternity workforce professionals that meet Australia’s current and future maternity service needs, providing women with access to services, their choice of care or carers, is culturally safe, and treats everyone with respect and dignity. It will focus on creating practical and meaningful talent pipeline, recruitment, and retention strategies for all maternity clinicians, including but not limited to midwives, obstetricians, general practitioners and appropriate allied health practitioners. The strategy will not be addressing industrial matters or models of care.
