AMA honours the passing of two senior officeholders
It is our sad duty to inform you of the passing of two senior AMA officeholders, who provided distinguished service to promote the professional interests of doctors and the healthcare needs of Australians.

Dr Lindsay Thompson and Dr Brian Morton AM recently passed away.
Dr Thompson was aged 96. He served as AMA President from 1982-1985 during the momentous introduction of Medicare and he led the medical profession during the country’s first doctors’ strike.
He was a Lakemba-based GP and a strong believer in the AMA’s role as a stable and credible voice in the medical profession, saying “the AMA is and will continue to be the only effective representative body of the medical profession”.
Dr Thompson’s service was awarded with the AMA Gold Medal in recognition of his courageous and selfless devotion to the profession and his leadership ability to resolve major confrontation between the medical profession and government.
Dr Thompson's funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 15 at 11am, at St Andrews Anglican Church, Lakemba, with a wake to follow at Strathfield Golf Club.
Dr Morton AM served as a long-time Chair of the AMA Council of General Practice and President of AMA NSW.
He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2014 for his outstanding service to medicine as a general practitioner — a fitting tribute to his incredible contribution going above and beyond to serve his community.
Dr Morton was President of the AMA NSW from 2008 to 2010.
Dr Morton's funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 15 at 11am at St Swithun's Church, Pymble, followed by a gathering at Avondale Golf Club.
The AMA passes on its condolences to the family and friends of Dr Thompson and Dr Morton.
