Climate change and sustainability: leadership and action from Australian doctors Webinar

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) and Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) are pleased to invite our members and other interested health professionals to join us for the 2022 webinar on climate change and sustainable healthcare.

Following on from the success of last year’s webinar, we aim to bring together medical professionals and Australia’s medical colleges to showcase the steps our sector is taking towards embedding sustainability across medicine. The webinar will be held on Tuesday 9 August 2022. 6.30-8.30pm AEST.

Minister for Health and Aged Care the Hon Mark Butler will provide an introduction for the webinar, followed by presentations from Dr Karen Nicholls (Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association), Prof Nick Tally (Editor-in-chief of the Medical Journal of Australia), Prof Alexandra Barratt (Professor of Public Health, University of Sydney). Following this, we will hear from Australia’s medical colleges on their past and future activities in relation to climate change and sustainability, and the impacts of climate change on their specialty. Dr Kate Charlesworth (NSW Health) will provide a webinar wrap-up.

Australia’s healthcare sector is estimated to contribute to 7% of Australia’s total carbon footprint, yet climate change is contributing to life-threatening illnesses and deaths. Many in the healthcare sector are working to improve carbon footprints and sustainability practises.  This webinar will provide an avenue to highlight the duty of care of medical professionals have to lead in sustainable healthcare and explore why high value care is low carbon care.

The webinar will be moderated by the incoming AMA President and Dr John Van De Kallen (DEA Chair).
