GP eligibility for phase 1a COVID-19 vaccination

The AMA has had confirmation from the Department of Health that general practitioners (GPs) and other health professionals who routinely provide care within a residential facility are also eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine under the classification of aged care staff or disability staff as a part of phase 1a of the national rollout strategy.

Vaccinations within aged care facilities prioritises aged care residents, followed by eligible staff.

A Department of Health factsheet that provides further information on staff eligibility is available here.

The AMA sought confirmation following an incident where a GP was denied vaccination when attending a residential aged care facility where the vaccinations were being undertaken and spare doses were available. The Department has provided the factsheet to the in-reach contractor involved and residential aged care providers.
