TGA approves Pfizer for third dose

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved a booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 18 years and older.

The booster is to be provided at least six months after the completion of a COVID-19 vaccine primary course of two doses of any of the COVID-19 vaccine registered for use in Australia.

TGA approval is only the first step, with final advice on the roll out of third doses will be provided to the Government by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI). It is expected that a general population booster program will commence no later than 8 November, beginning with the original priority groups.

As yet, Moderna has not applied to the TGA for registration of booster doses for their vaccine.

GPs are reminded that they should only be providing third doses to individuals who are severely immunocompromised until the ATAGI guidelines are released.
