AMA says GPs don’t need second opinion in response to Disability Support Impairment Tables Review

5 Aug 2021

The AMA has said that a GP diagnosis of a mental health or psychological condition should not need to be corroborated by a third party in a submission in response to the Disability Support (DSP) Impairment Tables Review Issues Paper.

The involvement of third parties raises important equity issues for patients who need to access psychiatric or psychological care.

The submission also highlights improvements that could be made to the impairment tables and the problems with the requirement for conditions to be fully diagnosed, treated and stabilised especially for conditions that are episodic, fluctuating and progressive.
