Ready for Family Doctor Week?

Family Doctor Week will kick off on Sunday 23 July with the theme ‘Your Family Doctor: Here For You”. The week is an important event that brings attention to the role of GPs in delivering care to the community. Patients who have a regular GP – a family doctor – have better continuity of care and better health outcomes as a result.

GPs play a vital role in the Australian healthcare system, being the first port of call for patients who feel unwell. The AMA wants to see GPs recognised and supported for the quality and cost-effective care they provide and is working hard to see meaningful funding injected into general practice now and into the future.

General practices for too long have been systematically starved of funding. Future funding arrangements need to recognise and support the quality care that GPs provide.

In the highlight of the week’s celebrations, the AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, will speak at the National Press Club. The AMA President’s speech is an important event on the political calendar and this year Dr Bartone will focus on ‘Health Reform: Improving the Patient Journey’. The speech will be broadcast live on ABC and ABC News, Wednesday 25 July 2018, from 12.30pm and concludes 1.30pm http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/national-press-club-address/ televised and live-streamed on the ABC.
