Mental health resources for current and former serving ADF members

For GPs with patients who are former serving members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) a comprehensive health assessment initiative has been made available. The ADF Post-discharge GP Health Assessment is funded under the MBS health assessment items 701, 703, 705 and 707. The assessment is available once only, and supports GPs in identifying and diagnosing the early onset of physical and/or mental health problems among former serving ADF members.

The ADF Post-discharge GP Health Assessment Tool supports the assessment which includes specific screening tools for alcohol use, substance use, PTSD and psychological distress. The tool also includes information on how to access other DVA services that their patient may be eligible for. Further information and links to resources can be found on the at-ease website. DVA has a number of other resources for health professionals which can assist GPs in treating current and former service ADF members. You can read more about these resources here

DVA has also prepared a Mental Health Series of videos focussing on mental health issues for current and former members of the ADF. These videos contain information for veterans and current serving members, urging anyone facing problems to call the Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service or ADF All Hours Support Line or to see their GP.

You can watch the videos on DVA’s YouTube Channel.
