Liver damage from hair growth products leads to urgent recall

AMA members are advised that the Therapeutic Goods Administration has issued an urgent medical recall for complementary medicines from Global Therapeutics which are intended to improve hair growth. GPs may see patients presenting with liver damage as a result of taking these products.

The TGA received reports of liver injury in consumers taking these products, with some cases requiring hospitalisation. To date, all cases reported in Australia have either improved or resolved after discontinuation of the product. While the risk of drug induced liver injury is low, it has the potential to be life-threatening.

The exact products are:

  • Hair Tonic – Fusion Health Capsules
  • Hair Tonic Capsules
  • Hairpro - Alopecia, Hair Loss, Premature Greying - Oriental Botanicals Capsules
  • Hairpro Capsules
