Last week to apply for AMA Indigenous Peoples’ Scholarship
Medical students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background have until 31 January to apply for the AMA Indigenous Peoples’ Scholarship. The successful applicant will receive $10,000 each year for the duration of their course to assist them in their studies.
Training a highly skilled medical workforce that includes more Indigenous doctors and health professionals is an important part of closing the Indigenous health and life expectancy gap, says AMA President, Professor Brian Owler.
Since 1994, the Scholarship has assisted over 20 Indigenous men and women become doctors, many of whom may not otherwise have had the financial resources to study medicine. Previous AMA Scholarship recipients have graduated to work in Indigenous and mainstream health services, and some have spent time providing care in their own communities. To be eligible to apply, students must be currently enrolled full time at an Australian medical school and in at least their first year of medicine. Applications for the Scholarship must be received by 31 January 2016.
