Information on 2018 seasonal influenza vaccines

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has developed advice for immunisation providers regarding 2018 seasonal influenza vaccines. A factsheet has been made available for health professionals who administer influenza vaccines.

The ATAGI factsheet details the new formulations that are available, optimal timing, information for pregnant women and details on eligibility under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). Though protection is expected to last for the entire season, optimal protection against influenza occurs within the first 3 to 4 months following vaccination.

In addition, GPs are reminded that it is never too late to vaccinate as influenza can circulate all year round. Vaccination can continue to be offered as long as influenza viruses are in circulation and a valid vaccine is available.
