Indigenous medical students encouraged to apply for AMA Scholarship

The AMA is now accepting applications for the 2016 AMA Indigenous Peoples’ Medical Scholarship. AMA President, Professor Brian Owler, said that a highly skilled medical workforce that includes more Indigenous doctors and health professionals is an important part of reducing health inequalities for Indigenous Australians.

Since 1994, the Scholarship has assisted over 20 Indigenous men and women become doctors, many of whom may not otherwise have had the financial resources to study medicine. Previous AMA Scholarship recipients have graduated to work in Indigenous and mainstream health services, and some have spent time providing care in their own communities. Read the story of this year’s scholarship winner, India Latimore, and profiles of past winners, on the Indigenous Peoples’ Medical Scholarship webpage.

The successful applicant will receive $10,000 each year for the duration of their course. To be eligible to apply, students must be currently enrolled full time at an Australian medical school and in at least their first year of medicine. Applications for the Scholarship must be received by 31 January 2016.

Information about the scholarship and an application package can be downloaded from the AMA website.  Further enquiries can be made to Sandra Riley, Administration Officer, AMA, via email sriley@ama.com.au or by phone on (02) 6270 5452.
