The AMA’s annual celebration of Australia’s hardworking GPs came to a close last weekend. Family Doctor Week 2017 included news stories, events and a great deal of social media engagement celebrating the importance of the family doctor.

The last few days of Family Doctor Week addressed aspects of health that span across an individual’s lifetime. GPs play a vital role in giving children the best start in life, helping parents prepare before starting a family as well as providing support to new parents. They are also often the most accessible medical professional for people to discuss mental health with, providing patients with opportunities to have confidential and important conversations.
On the closing day of Family Doctor Week, AMA President Dr Michael Gannon outlined the critical role GPs play for older patients.
