Doctors need to look after their own health

The recent tragic suicides of a number of doctors in training in Victoria is an unfortunate reminder of the need for doctors to look after their own health, have their own GP and to access appropriate support services in times of need.

There is evidence that doctors are at greater risk of mental illness and stress-related problems and more susceptible to substance abuse. Further, depression and anxiety are common among doctors and their suicide rate is higher than in the general population.

Any doctor in need of support, counselling or just a talk can call their local doctors’ health service, with contact details available from the AMA Website.
