Is the intern year fit for purpose? Have your say

11 Mar 2015

The Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council is reviewing the medical internship. A discussion paper has been released to support the initial consultation phase of the review. The AMA will be making a submission and we will be consulting with our membership.

“Maintaining quality, generalist medical training in the early prevocational years is fundamental”, said Dr Danika Thiemt, Chair, AMA Council of Doctors in Training. “Prevocational training should expose junior doctors to a range of medical disciplines and clinical situations to give a firm foundation for future practice in any medical specialty. This approach will also help trainees to make meaningful and informed decisions about their career choices and vocational training,” she said.

If you have any input to help inform the AMA's submission please send it to by 20 March 2015.
