The Need for Better Digital Connectivity to Improve Health Care of Rural Australians

The widespread adoption of telehealth since introduced in 2020 has escalated the demand on reliable internet access. However, internet connectivity in rural and remote Australia is consistently reported unreliable. A better telecommunication infrastructure which will provide better internet access will also enable the implementation of other innovative models of care, remote mentoring and supervision for medical training/CPD, and network practices.

This scoping paper outlines the current state of technology telecommunications in rural and remote Australia, the practice of telehealth in these settings, and recommendations for better telecommunication infrastructure to support effective telehealth for rural and remote communities.
