Position Statement

National Intern Allocation Process - 2021

The AMA has revised its policy on a national intern allocation system for medical internships.

The model described here would create significant efficiencies and ensure greater flexibility and certainty for prospective interns and their employers.

The AMAs support for a single national intern allocation portal remains unchanged and continues to give states and territories control over the priority and allocation process while providing sufficient flexibility and choice for graduates.

The AMA believes this model would create significant efficiencies and ensure greater flexibility and certainty for prospective interns and their employers about workforce numbers at the beginning of the clinical year.

This could not come at a better time with the National Medical Workforce Strategy expected to highlight the need for improved collaboration, planning, information sharing and action to provide quality data and improve the evidence base that underpins workforce planning.
