AMA Submission on the revised Endorsement for Scheduled Medicines for Optometrists

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) opposes the revisions proposed by the Optometry Board of Australia, which would extend the scope of medicines that an endorsed optometrist can prescribe to include oral medicines.

Optometrists do not receive sufficient training and experience to manage the systemic risks that come with oral medications. The AMA also asserts that any non-medical prescribing model should be patient-centred alongside strong clinical governance, and administrative convenience should not jeopardise patient safety.
