AMA submission on the review of the Registration standard: Endorsement for scheduled medicines and the Guidelines for use of scheduled medicines for optometrists
The AMA contends the best-practice model of healthcare is patient-centred, collaborative, and clinically led, with non-medical health practitioners prescribing limited formularies within their scope of practice. This approach minimises fragmentation of care and unnecessary risks to patients. The AMA therefore objects to the removal of the regulatory restrictor of “topical”, the removal of clinical guidance, and the removal of the approved medicines list from the current guideline.
