AMA submission on Requirements for the supervision of medical pathology laboratories

The AMA strongly supports the definition of the Director of Medical Pathology Services as a registered medical practitioner, as described in the draft Requirements for the Supervision of Medical Laboratories released for comment by the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council. However, the AMA questions the lack of clarity in the current draft regarding the scope of practice of clinical scientists in a medical pathology laboratory. Medical expertise must be a requirement in the provision of medical pathology services in order to ensure quality of service to Australian patients.
