AMA submission to Attorney General’s Department – Review of the Privacy Act 1988, a response to the Discussion Paper

The AMA submission to the Review of the Privacy Act 1988, a response to the Discussion Paper raises significant concerns with the impact of applying some of the proposed reforms to medical practice and research.

While these proposed changes may be justified in other sectors, the AMA does not support them being applied to medical practice and research, which has appropriate privacy positive practices under the existing legislation. Rather than fundamentally changing the Privacy Act, the concerns in the Discussion Paper would be better addressed through separate legislation that applies to prescribed services, organisations or activities.

The AMA made an earlier submission to an issues paper on this reform which is available here.
