AMA submission on the Interim Report of the Independent Review of Overseas Health Practitioner Regulatory Settings

The AMA’s submission on the Interim Report of the Independent Review of Overseas Health Practitioner Regulatory Settings (the Kruk Review) is supportive of the efforts to streamline the immigration and application processes for international medical graduates (IMGs), but raises concerns with other recommendations.

The AMA does not support the recommendation to transfer the assessments of specialist IMGs from the Medical Colleges to the Australian Medical Council, the lowering of English language standards, or the removal of labour market testing.

The submission also highlights the need for more structured supports for IMGs when they arrive in Australia, calls for the return of an independent workforce agency, and for appropriate funding to be provided to regulators to support these improvements.
