AMA Submission on definition of general practice for the purpose of accreditation

The AMA responds to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners' consultation on the definition of general practice for the purposes of accreditation. The AMA warns against general practice accreditation supporting models of care that operate outside the auspices of holistic general practice.

The AMA submission regarding the definition of general practices seeks to essentially retain the definition but with a refocus on the practice services predominantly in general practice rather than each of the individual doctors working in the practice. The AMA considers that amending the definition in this way will better support the evolution of general practice, as outlined in the AMA 10-Year Framework for Primary Care Reform, towards a medical home model that supports value based care delivered by medically led health care teams, providing patient-centred and comprehensive care, supported by a blended model of funding. The AMA warns against general practice accreditation supporting models of care that operate outside the auspices of holistic general practice.
