Alcohol Taxation Summit Communique

On September 28, 2011, the AMA President chaired a major summit on alcohol taxation with the National Alliance for Action on Alcohol. Experts from over 30 peak public health and police organisations endorsed a Communiqué outlining alcohol tax reforms for consideration at the Government’s Tax Forum in October. The reforms focused on the importance of a system of volumetric taxation in terms of health gains, and the need for a wine equalisation tax. As a consequnce of the AMA/NAAA summit, the issue of alcohol taxation was raised at that Government's Tax Forum. The Communique is attached.
