Constitutional changes to reform your AMA

Members are advised of the upcoming AGM.

You would have recently received information from the federal AMA about our upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, 29 May and the proposed changes to our Constitution.

Australia’s health landscape is constantly evolving and doctors are facing many challenges across all facets of the health system.

This requires us to constantly seek fresh perspectives and find new ways to adapt to an ever-changing environment. In addition to this we find ourselves in an increasingly complex governance landscape.

To this end, we are proposing a change to the Constitution that will allow the appointment of two independent directors to the AMA Board.

These additional appointees can bring new ideas to the Board and offer a diverse range of expertise that we may otherwise miss out on.

We know from other examples across the industry that independent board members can ensure a wider range of viewpoints are considered. These new skills and perspectives are crucial for new strategies to drive the AMA forward, as well as identifying and managing potential risks.

AMA WA, AMA Queensland, AMA SA and many of the medical colleges have all appointed independent directors with great success.

This change will bring the federal AMA in line with the rest of the industry and ensure we have best-practice governance.

Through these constitutional changes we can continue to reform your AMA to be a more modern, responsive and vibrant membership organisation.

We are using an electronic system called ElectionBuddy which sends out SMS and email prompts in the period leading up to the 27 May 2025 deadline to register to vote or submit a proxy. You can complete and submit proxy forms using ElectionBuddy or via the online form available on our AGM webpage, which includes links to relevant documents and more details about the AGM.

Please also take the time to read our 2024 Annual Report to reflect on what was an eventful year for the AMA.
