The challenges of night shifts

Drs4Drs have some advice for keeping well while working night shifts.

Night shifts are an essential part of work for most doctors, however the effects of this on the body and mind can be easily underestimated. “Jet lag” symptoms like irritability, fatigue and difficulty concentrating are normal reactions of not having enough sleep and working through the night.

Therefore, it is key to take care of yourself during this time. Making sure you are getting enough sleep before and after your night shift, cutting back on caffeine and finding ways to wind down before sleep, e.g. warm baths or mindfulness exercises, can boost your overall well-being and health.
