The power of primary care to rebuild trust in vaccines
This week we released a new report on Australia’s declining immunisation rates highlighting the important role general practitioners play in helping to reverse the decline, by encouraging vaccination, addressing misinformation and vaccine fatigue.
GPs are trusted voices in their communities and play a pivotal role in encouraging vaccination.
The report highlights the need for greater investment in general practice, including increased funding for the Workforce Incentive Program, to expand access to immunisation services through GPs and practice nurses.
Federal AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen urged Australians who were unsure about vaccinations to seek advice from their family seek advice from their family GP.
The report follows the release of the federal AMA’s Position Statement on Immunisation in September and an ongoing public relations strategy to highlight the decline in immunisation rates and encourage uptake of important vaccines.
The statement reaffirms immunisation as the most effective public health intervention and calls for renewed efforts from governments, health professionals and communities, to rebuild trust, improve access, and boost vaccination rates.
